Sending Flowers? Will you pay 25% commission to the middleman?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Doesn’t sound good does it? But the sad fact is customers ordering flowers online often pay 25% commission, plus a service fee to the middleman.

Surprisingly, this business practice includes most big name flower operators. Direct2florist on the other hand is a bunch of florists grouped together to help win back and provide customers with their full moneys worth.

A new and unique way for customers to order direct, Direct2florist is home to real local florists in USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand. The site places the customer in direct contact with the florists. 100% flower money goes to the florist.

The ease of the system allows florists to set themselves up with a professional online ordering website where the florist displays their own work, at their price, which they receive in full. Florists are able to set up in minutes using the easy to use D2F control panel. New members to the site include Novelli Floral and Greenhouse and Everyday Flowers both florists are brand new to D2F and are based in United States.

Shops upload pictures of their work, their shop and set their delivery areas. The process takes 10mins

Floristry
Floristry is a very visual trade skill that shows the best of Mother Nature, using cuttings from different exotic and native flowers and plants and involves using colour, textures and embellishments.

The assembling of flower arrangements for different occasions needs talent and a special eye and colour co-ordination for the intricate detailing necessary. World skills courses recently held in New Zealand demonstrate the very high standards of floristry the students are learning. Troubleshooting your digital images

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words and the definitely holds true in the flower biz. A photograph of your designs can instantly convey your talent and expertise to your customers. Not only are good snapshots important when it comes to building portfolio of your work, it’s also a perfect way to lure customers in when they’re browsing online for a florist. One of the most effective tools a florist can have in the shop is a digital camera. Toda’s digital point-and-shoots have made the art of photography a relative snap and it’s quick and easy to get an image of an arrangement before it heads out in a delivery truck. Read on to find out how you can capture a quality image that illustrates the true beauty of the design.

What’s behind does matter

A simple background is key to a great product picture. You want customers to focus on the flowers in the picture, not the people or products lurking in behind. Buy a few coloured fabric swatches to use as a background and make sure the fabric hangs flat – either wall, stand or the back of a chair. Avoid black, which can drown out detail or white, which is hard to light (unless you have a light tent, see our web site for more info) and go with a solid colour

Light it up

You need to properly light your photos to capture the true colours of the flowers and avoid any dark shadows or overexposed area. Often the camera’s flash out the image and produce using a soft light source that shines from behind you – either a window with natural lightening or a 100 watt bulb a carefully positioned piece of white cardboard, held just behind the camera can also help redirect light onto your product. Play around with the lighting and see what works best.

Get close and snap away

Fill the picture frame with the design so your customers can see all the finer details – either step closer to the design or zoom in to get a nice, tight shot. Kneel down so you are eye level with the product or invest in a mini tripod to make sure you take steady, level shots. Take both horizontal and vertical pictures as well as a few different angles to showcase the various aspects of the arrangement.

Putting those pictures into use

If you’re a tech whiz, then playing with editing software can sharpen or lighten your photos. Their area numbers of editing programs available to buy as well as a few free online editors. But if your happy with the way the pictures look, then select our favourites and print away, keep a back-up CD with all your images just in case you want to print more. Organise your designs into themes in a photo album or portfolio so they are readily available when customers asks.

Let the we see what you’ve got

Add the new photos to your web site so potential online customers can view samples of your style. On the web, you don’t need large files – the bigger the file, the longer the photos will take to load your site. Similarly, many web site providers won’t allow you to upload large files. There are a few simple ways you can go about reducing the size of the file to make them web-ready. Make sure when you’re shrinking a photo you keep a copy of the original saved somewhere. Many photo editing programs have an option that lets you shrink the picture, but you can also do it for free online (and you don’t have to download a thing) at www.shrinkpictures.com or www.easyphotoresize.com. These sites allow you to shrink by a percentage or reduce them to a certain pixel size. Figure out which size looks best on your site and keep all of the pictures uniform size.

Once you get the hang of your camera and your software, it’s always easier the second time round don’t forget to update your print and web portfolio frequently with your latest and greatest!

Quicker, cheaper & better value for customers.

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

The successful growth of Direct2florist over the last 16 months has led the team behind D2F to already start work on a florist2florist connection between florists on the site. The florist2florist (f2f) connection will allow florists to send orders direct to each other cutting costs and time delays currently encountered by traditional relay or wire services.

Despite the new system being in its early stages of development and despite the fact Direct2florist have made no formal announcement about it to their members, already over 80 florists have found the f2f feature and used it. One of the 1st florists being Sandra at Astra Florist in Toronto, Canada. Sandra sent an order to Pattisons florist in Cape Town, South Africa. Asked why she used the f2f feature, she said “this system is so direct, I can use the regular trans service we have in Canada, but with f2f the order goes direct to the florist. That saves time which is important on an urgent delivery. The f2f system also cuts middlemen which saves the customer money and gives everybody better value.”

It is hoped the f2f feature will become a huge benefit for florists that currently pay high membership fees and percentages to the current wire/relay services that are out there. Best of all a new direct system like this gives customers excellent value for money when sending flowers.

More details on the new f2f feature will be released to all florists registered to Direct2florist in the coming weeks.

Beijing Blooms at the Olympics

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Watching the Opening ceremony of the Olympics last night was the the 1st real opportunity I have ever had to see Beijing close up. What a beautiful city! And “wow”, the Olympic opening; as I write this in the UK, it seems impossible London will be able to compete in 4 years time.

This morning I was delighted to receive pictures from Stanley Wong, of Wicker Express in Hong Kong and Beijing. Stanley is our proud D2F representative in Hong Kong and China and he is growing the D2F presence in major cities across China.

Florists in Class

In this picture we can see the trainer making a very large floral display, which looks really amazing. This is the 1st time I have ever seen real florists at work in China. Personally speaking, I know so little about the far east and the way things “get done” that I find it fascinating to see people on the other side of the world working in floristry. I think this is what makes the Direct2florist concept so great. It makes the sending of flowers from continent to continent so real; for the 1st time you can see and choose a real florist that is actually located in that area. IMO This type of application makes the internet great. (But that’s just me!)

Hot off the press from Beijing, Stanley sent some snaps of last nights opening ceremony. Thanks Stanley, keep them coming!

Final thought. Someday like the 5 rings of the olympics, one day soon, maybe Direct2florist will have florists in each of the five continents.
